Marriage Advice from the Best Man

A Best Man story:

This Best Man speech example (or Father of the Bride if you prefer) demonstrates perfectly the art of story telling. It can be used as part of your speech and is an excellent way to end your speech on a high. Once the laughter has died down simply add a toast by asking the audience to raise their glasses to a wonderful couple.

The Secret of a Happy Marriage

As the best man I feel I have a duty to give you two love birds some words of wisdom on how to have a happy marriage. So I’m going to tell you a story about the secret of a happy marriage.

Once upon a time there was once a little old man and a little old lady who had been married for a very long time. In fact, they had been together for more than 60 years.

They had had a wonderful life together. They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had done everything together.

Throughout their lives they had kept no secrets from each other except for one small thing. The little old lady had a shoe box that she kept at the back of a cupboard. Her husband knew about the box but she had always said to him that he was never to open the box or to ask her about it.

For all of those years, he had never thought about the box. Then one day the little old lady became very ill and the doctor said she would not recover. In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoe box and took it to his wife's bedside. She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box.

When he opened the box, he found two embroidered napkins and a stack of money totalling £20,000. So he asked her about the contents.

"When we were to be married," she said, "My grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and embroider a napkin."

The little old man was so moved, he had to fight back tears. Only two precious napkins were in the box. She had only been angry with him two times in all those years of living and loving.

He almost burst with happiness. "Honey," he said, "that explains the napkins, but what about all of this money? Where did it come from?"

"Oh," she said, "that's the money I made from selling the napkins."
