I was delighted to be asked by Luke to be the best man at his wedding
And then I realised I had to make a speech - which quite frankly, I was dreading
I have thought long and hard about how to deliver this speech of mine
And finally decided to give it some flair by doing it in rhyme
Half the fun of that, of course, is seeing Luke's face so vexed
As he frantically tries to work out what on earth is coming next!

So as the best man it is my pleasant duty to welcome you all here today
To celebrate this great occasion with Luke and Lucy in such a special way
And as you know it is traditional on occasions such as these
For the best man to do all the thank you's - so listen up, if you please

First of all, I'd like to thank you all for coming - it really means a lot
To Luke and Lucy to have you here to witness them tying the knot
And thank you to the bridesmaids - for making the dream complete
For I speak for everyone here when I say you really look a treat

So now I've got the preliminaries done and out the way
I can now get down to business and say what I really want to say
Because let's face it folks, I'm the one that's known Luke for more than a little while
Which means, I probably know the most about our host AND I've kept a file!!
Yes, this is the bit where stories - once forgotten- now get the chance to be told
And Luke you’re now wondering if I really am going to be that bold!

You can tell by the look on Luke's face he's worried what I'm going to say
How much shall I tell everyone and dare I mention it all today?
I can see the beads of perspiration starting to form upon your brow
As you worry about which story I'm going to tell everyone right now
Well to be honest Luke I've wracked my brains for anecdotes
and it's been absolute hell
Trying to find a funny story that was actually suitable to tell!!

Now Luke and I have known each other for many, many years
We've had good times and bad – shared our hopes and even our fears
It has been an honour and a privilege Luke to be chosen as your best man
And I want you to know that as well as Lucy I too am your biggest fan
There's just one thing that puzzles me though - perhaps I’m being a bit dim
But if I really am the BEST man- why on earth is she marrying him?

Maybe its Luke's many good qualities that really sets him apart
For I am really proud to know him and I say that from the bottom of my heart
Luke you are truly one in a million – a kind and generous guy
With a beautiful wife beside you who is the apple of your eye

May you both be blessed forever with happiness and health
For in each other we can see you have already found true wealth
You don’t need lucky horse shoes, not even a chimney sweep
As your marriage is made in heaven and your love is very deep

Luke and Lucy – you are a couple that are well and truly blessed
You deserve to have a life together that is definitely the best
So I’ll end by saying – Let’s be upstanding – Everyone in the room
And raise our glasses and drink a toast to a very special Bride & Groom!
